Mega Sumo is a category of extremely powerful combat robots that use high-torque motors, advanced control systems, and special blades or lifting mechanisms to push opponents out of the ring as quickly as possible. In this discipline, weight balance, reaction speed, and programming logic are crucial – which is why the strongest teams from Europe and Asia compete in it.
The international RoboChallenge competition is officially certified by the “All Japan Robot Sumo Tournament”, making the results highly prestigious. Winners earn a place in the final tournament held in Japan.
“Placing 4th in the Mega Sumo category is an excellent achievement for the new generation of our club. It’s our first top result with the renewed team. This was only our second time participating in RoboChallenge, so we’re especially proud of the outcome,” said Evgenii Iamshchikov, head of the Klaipeda University Robotics Club.
Another creation by the KU Robotics Club also competed – a robot named Perkūnas, only a week old, also developed by E. Iamshchikov and J. Valius. Though still in testing, Perkūnas ranked 16th out of 60 participants, showing significant potential for further improvement.
According to E. Iamshchikov, robot combat competitions of this level are extremely rare in the Baltic States. Currently, the Klaipeda University Robotics Club is the only organization in Lithuania that hosts international robot sumo tournaments. Twice a year, in March and October, Klaipėda hosts the Baltic Robot Sumo tournament.
The 2025 autumn competition was held at the university on October 11.
