European Experts Recognise Klaipeda University in the Field of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine

Klaipeda University (KU) has received a significant international recognition: the KU Centre for Postgraduate Medical Studies and the Rehabilitation Clinic of Klaipeda University Hospital (KUH) have been awarded the prestigious certification of the European Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (EBPRM). This accreditation, granted only to high-quality training institutions in Europe, officially confirms that KU and KUH meet European standards for education and training in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM).

The EBPRM is one of the leading European bodies responsible for ensuring the quality of PRM specialist training, standardising professional competencies, and evaluating training institutions. It operates within the framework of the Union of European Medical Specialists (UEMS) – the oldest European organisation representing medical specialists, uniting more than 1.6 million physicians from EU Member States and beyond, and contributing directly to the shaping of European health policy.

According to Prof. Dr Alvydas Juocevičius, a PRM physician, long-standing member of the EBPRM Board, Chair of the Training Centres Certification Section, and former President of the Board, the five-year accreditation is not only a mark of quality but also a confirmation of readiness to deliver PRM residency training.

“At present, the KU Centre for Postgraduate Medical Studies and the Rehabilitation Clinic of Klaipeda University Hospital are the only EBPRM-recognised training centre in Lithuania. This prestigious recognition demonstrates that the University and the Clinic possess the appropriate educational, clinical and research infrastructure required for residency training, which may also serve as a strong argument in discussions with the Ministry of Health,” notes the Professor.

He emphasises that this achievement represents an important opportunity for the medical sector in Western Lithuania.

“EBPRM accreditation is not merely an international quality label; it is a strategic step that can make a real contribution to the launch of PRM residency training in Klaipėda and to the strengthening of regional healthcare. From experience, I know that specialists who complete their residency in Kaunas or Vilnius usually remain there. An internationally evaluated programme would not only help train new physicians and reduce workforce shortages in Western Lithuania, but also strengthen the regional healthcare system by enhancing the qualifications of existing specialists. Moreover, offering PRM residency training would make Klaipėda even more attractive to young medical professionals,” shares Prof. Dr A. Juocevičius.

According to Prof. Dr Linas Venclauskas, Head of the KU Centre for Postgraduate Medical Studies and an abdominal surgeon at Klaipeda University Hospital, the EBPRM certificate represents a significant recognition of the work carried out by both the University and the Hospital.

“The decision of the European Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine demonstrates that the Klaipeda University Centre for Postgraduate Medical Studies, in cooperation with the Rehabilitation Clinic of Klaipeda University Hospital, is creating a study and practical training environment that meets European standards. I believe that the certification awarded to the Centre and the Clinic creates the necessary preconditions for the establishment of a PRM residency programme in Klaipėda and for the consistent development of postgraduate medical education in the region,” emphasised Prof. Dr L. Venclauskas.
