Klaipeda University Gym to receive the Acorn symbol: not only the infrastructure adapted, but also the maturity of attitude

On April 17, Klaipeda University (KU) Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) Gym was given the Acorn – the symbol of Parateam Lietuva, the Lithuanian Paralympic team. A special sticker with this symbol marks the infrastructure, which is friendly and accessible to people with disabilities. This is the highest level of quality recognition given by the Lithuanian Paralympic Committee for the efforts to create a physical activity environment that is open and safe for all.

KU FSSF Gym is one of the most modern and accessible sports facilities in Western Lithuania. The Gym has a lift, automatic doors, cushioned floor, barrier-free toilets and showers for easy access for people with disabilities.

“This symbol for KU community is not only about architectural adaptability, but above all about maturity of attitude and openness to all, regardless of their physical capabilities. It is a commitment to make sport, like science, accessible to everyone, who wants to move, get stronger, and be a part of the community,” says Prof. Dr. Asta Šarkauskienė, Head of the Department of Sport of the Faculty of Health Sciences at KU.

According to her, this award is a symbol of Klaipeda University’s efforts to create an inclusive environment: “This is not just a sign on the door – it is an invitation. An invitation to everyone, especially those with disabilities, not to be afraid to come, to play sports, to feel equal. Everyone has the right to movement, self-expression, community spirit.”

The sports facilities are suitable for practically all playing sports: basketball, football, volleyball, table tennis, and badminton. Six new basketball boards have been installed in the Gym, which makes it possible to divide athletes into groups according to their physical capacity and health status and to differentiate the physical load. KU sports facilities are designed not only for the academic needs of the University, but also for target physical activity groups, including people with disabilities.
