Klaipeda University at the World University Games: KU Representatives Join Both the Coaching Staff and the Court

Klaipeda University (KU) continues to affirm its position as one of Lithuania’s leading centers of student basketball. This year, the university will be proudly represented at the World University Games by KU student Gediminas Leščiauskas, who has been selected for the national team, and KU men’s basketball team coach Mindaugas Stašys, who has been invited to join the coaching staff of the Lithuanian student team.

“This is a tremendous recognition not only for me personally but for the entire sports community at Klaipeda University. It is gratifying that our efforts have been acknowledged at the national level. Our university truly has something to offer Lithuanian basketball—both in terms of players and coaching expertise. I believe that experiences like this will further inspire our youth to pursue ambitious goals,” said Mindaugas Stašys.

In recent years, the KU basketball program has demonstrated consistent growth and success. Students actively compete in the Lithuanian Students Basketball League (LSKL), and the team’s coach is known for his innovative and results-driven approach. His players are increasingly being invited to regional, national, and international camps and tournaments. The university’s view of sports as an integral component of academic life supports the development of well-rounded, physically prepared, and highly motivated students.

The World University Games officially begin today, July 16, with the basketball tournament set to start a few days later. The Lithuanian student team will compete from July 19 to 21 in three German cities: Essen, Duisburg, and Hagen. Lithuania will face teams from Lebanon, South Korea, and Argentina.

At Klaipėda University, sport is an inseparable part of academic culture. The university offers a unique bachelor’s study program in Leisure Sports—unmatched in Lithuania—which grants both a Bachelor’s degree in Sports and a professional qualification as a physical education teacher. Students may specialize in basketball, football, or sports dance. Graduates of the program successfully pursue careers as PE teachers, coaches, or as entrepreneurs in the fields of sports and leisure.
