From artificial intelligence to hydrogen experiments: Engineers’ Day 2025 at Klaipeda University

On April 30, Klaipeda University hosted the Engineers’ Day 2025 organized by the Faculty of Marine Technologies and Natural Sciences (FMTNS). This year’s event dedicated to engineers and their inventions attracted 231 participants. 112 pupils from Klaipėda, Palanga, Gargždai, and Kretinga preparatory high schools came to the event and not only could watch, but also feel the pulse of engineering.

The event was well attended by Klaipeda University community members, lecturers, and students. Business representatives, sponsors, and active dialogue partners, such as the Future Support Fund of Klaipeda University, BLRT Western Shipyard, Creative Partner, UAB, Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, Western Baltic Engineering, UAB, Omega 365 Lithuania, UAB, have also engaged.

Engineers’ Day 2025 opened with an inspiring plenary session, where four cutting-edge Klaipėda companies – Creative Partner, UAB, Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, Western Baltic Engineering, UAB, and Omega 365 Lithuania, UAB – presented not only the innovative solutions undergoing the development, but also the challenges that engineering is facing today. Klaipėda University partners shared insights on the impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market, digital twins, hydrogen technologies, and smart project management. The audience was introduced to the evolving port and ship design/engineering practices.

Interactive student education systems developed using artificial intelligence, robotics, and image recognition technologies have attracted lots of attention. One of them is Hydrogen Experimental Demonstration Stand by Heliocentris designed to explore hydrogen and solar energy technologies by monitoring the conversion of energy into electricity in real time. Andrius Stulgys, a computer engineering student at FMTNS, demonstrated how robotic arms controlled by Raspberry Pi 5 mini-computer autonomously recognize and assemble objects. Benas Dumbrauskas, MSc student in Innovative Electrical and Automation Systems, presented a prototype of an axial flux motor, which has an extremely high power density and could be used in electric transport without a reduction gearbox. Oleksandr Chervoniak, a student of Shipping and Port Engineering, carried out an in-depth experiment with a YASKAWA MH6 robot to find the most efficient welding parameters for ship hulls.

The next part of the event, Future Engineering ‘25 International Scientific Student Conference, started with a presentation by Dr. Kangiki Lee from AVL List GmbH (Germany) on sustainable trends in energy solutions in the maritime sector. Brian Bartolo (Malta) impressed the audience with his presentation on innovations in the data management for photovoltaic power. However, the most discussed presentation was AI-Driven Early Detection of Mental Health Risks in Children Using Wearable Monitoring Devices by Jankeeram Logesh Kumar (Mauritius). He presented a system for monitoring children’s mental health using artificial intelligence. Saulė Janavičiūtė and Dominykas Razmadze, students at FMTNS, held a presentation on quantum physics and cryptography convincingly combining fundamental science with practical security issues. Indrė Jonušonytė-Samoškienė’s complex analysis of ports revealed current trends of challenges and opportunities in the Baltic Region.

After the academic part, the FMTNS student delegation organized the Mindfight, a team quiz-type game, which was not only a game, but also a tense fight for honor and prizes. In total, 12 teams competed. The first place was won by Klaipeda University student team Skėčiai.

Engineers’ Day 2025 proved once again that when science and advanced technologies meet, not only are the solutions of the future born, but also the community that will make them happen is built.
